Solidly based on cutting-edge knowledge in quantitative genetics, biometry and reproduction technologies, Akvaforsk Genetics Center (AFGC) provides a range of services essential for a biologically efficient and sustainable aquaculture productions system.
Currently, operational services offered are
- Detailed planning of selective breeding programmes, including protocols for inbreeding control and effective dissemination of genetic gains to the industry;
- Support during the implementation phase;
- Design and maintenance of databases for critical performance and pedigree information;
- Estimation of genetic parameters;
- Genetic evaluations (estimation of breeding values); and
- Monitoring and documentation of gains.
In addition to the operational services AFGC also offers short term consultancy such as
- Developing genetic improvement strategies for companies or organizations
- Evaluation and economical assessment of breeding/broodstock management programs; and
- Workshops and short courses in applied genetic improvement methods
AFGC may be directly involved in programmes to produce and to market genetic improved material. "Genetic materials" refers to living organisms or cells such as eggs and milt. Such products may be either produced by AFGC itself, or in collaboration with strategic partners.
The AFGC can, and have experience to, serve aquaculture farms for any economically important species whose reproduction cycles can be controlled. Example species are Atlantic salmon, rainbow trout, Atlantic cod, turbot, sea bass, sea bream, carps, Atlantic halibut, tilapia and major marine shrimp species like P. vannmei, P. monodon and P.chinensis. |
