We are very pleased to announce that Dr. Trygve Gjedrem, by many looked upon as the father of modern fish breeding and selection, is now a member of the Akvaforsk Genetics Center team. Dr. Gjedrem earned his BsC in Animal Breeding at the Norwegian University of Life Sciences in 1956, and his doctorate in 1970. For 17 years he headed the Institute of Aquaculture Research (AKVAFORSK), building one of the strongest research groups in applied aquaculture research worldwide.
During his long career, Dr. Gjedrem has published a series of text books and more than 100 peer reviewed scientific papers in the field of quantitative genetics and selection, and initiated a number of pioneering international breeding programs including the GIFT program in the Philippines. In recognition of his distinguished service, Dr. Gjedrem has been awarded a number of national and international prices, including the prestigious Royal Norwegian Order of St. Olav.
